Messenger Will Notify You if Someone Screenshots Disappearing Chats

Messenger will soon alert those using disappearing messages in end-to-end encrypted chats if someone takes a screenshot of the conversation, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday.

It is part of a series of updates to improve services across platforms of Facebook parent Meta "with cybercrime and hacking on the rise," Messenger said.

"New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message," said Zuckerberg, sharing a screenshot of his conversation with wife Priscilla as sample.

Messenger said it would roll out the notification feature for disappearing messages in end-to-end encypted chats in the coming weeks.

Messenger also said the end-to-end encrypted group chat and calls feature is available to everyone. It will also add GIFs and stickers and allow reactions to messages in encrypted chats.

The updates also include:

  • Making typing indictors available in encrypted chats
  • Allowing message forward
  • Showing the verified badge to help identify authentic accounts
  • Allowing videos or images to be saved in devide
  • Giving option to edit photos or videos from the phone gallery before sending it
