Metro Manila and Baguio City on Sunday morning recorded their lowest temperatures so far this Amihan season, state weather bureau PAGASA said, as the northeast monsoon continues to bring chilly weather ahead of the holidays.

Temperature recorded at PAGASA's Science Garden in Quezon City further dropped to 20.4 degrees Celsius at 6:15 a.m. on Sunday from 22.2 degrees Celsius on Friday and 21.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday, weather specialist Ariel Rojas said.

That's colder than the recommended 25 degrees Celsius setting of the Department of Energy for airconditioners to save on electricity costs.

Baguio City up north registered a temperature of 11.4 degrees Celsius at 4:50 a.m., he added. That's a bit warmer than the inside of your refrigerator with the door closed.

"Ito ang pinakamababang record for both stations ngayong Amihan so far," Rojas said.

Amihan is the local name for the cool northeast monsoon, a major wind pattern that usually starts in the 'ber' months and lasts until February or March. The cool wind is associated with the Christmas season in the country.

When the wind patterns switch, the Philippines experiences Habagat or the southwest monsoon which is characterized by continuous heavy rains for days.

In its 5 a.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said cloudy skies with light rains will be experienced in Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora, and the northern portion of Quezon throughout the day due to the northeast monsoon.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains are also expected in Metro Manila, it added.
