The MRT said Friday it deployed newly-overhauled trains on its main line, increasing passenger capacity and reducing wait times for commuters as quarantines ease.

Each light rail vehicle train set is made up of three carriages. This is added to the 22 train sets currently running on the main line.

All MRT-3 trains run at 50 kph, faster compared to 30 kph in September. The Department of Transportation is eyeing to increase running speed for all trains to at least 60 kph by December.

With faster speeds and increased passenger capacity, train riders are now seeing shorter waiting times -- to just 4 minutes from 6.5 to 6 minutes in October

Due to quarantine restrictions and social distancing measures, the MRT-3 can only ferry 372 passengers at a time, or just 30% of capacity.
