More trainsets for the MRT-7, which cuts travel time between Quezon City and Bulacan, have arrived in the country, authorities said Thursday..

The four trainsets from South Korea were unveiled at Commonwealth Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City, with the first two trainsets placed on tracks last September. The entire MRT-7 system will have a total of 36 train sets or 108 rail cars.

"With a total cost of P77 billion, the MRT was funded by public and private partnership with the San Miguel Corp. under build-transfer-and-operate with a concession period of 25 years," President Rodrigo Duterte said during the unveiling.

Unlike other trains that use overhead catenary lines, the new trains will use a 'third rail' electrification system which powers the train from below the vehicle instead of from above.

Once operational, the 22-kilometer railway will link North Avenue, Quezon City and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan and slash travel time to 35 minutes from as long as three hours. The line is expected to serve over 38,000 passengers during peak hours daily, and ferry around 300,000 passengers daily in its first year of operations.

Overall progress rate is now at 62.10%. Test runs are eyed for April 2022 with full operations targetted by December 2022.
