One of the usual pre-employment requirements is an NBI Clearance, which tells your employer if you have an ongoing criminal case.
The document, usually a sheet of paper half the size of bond paper, certifies that an individual has no ongoing case in any part of the country and is valid for up to one year from the date of issuance. Unlike a police or barangay clearance that is area-specific, the NBI Clearance has nationwide coverage.
Filipinos applying for their first job are categorized as first-time clearance applicants, and must supply the full suite of information. Those who applied for their NBI Clearance starting Oct. 16, 2016 onwards can opt for a renewal, which is faster and less tedious.
First-time application vs. renewal
First-time NBI clearance applicants can start an account from scratch to be granted and NBI number. Those who previously applied for the NBI clearance can just use their existing NBI number and retrieve the same record for renewal.

What if I forgot my NBI number?
Along with your full name, input your registered e-mail address or phone number to receive a message containing the number. Take note that if you updated your phone or e-mail address, you may not receive it.
In such cases, you may have to make a physical appearance at an NBI office so staff can manually search for your record.

I have my number. Do I have to go to the NBI office?
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, NBI clearance application was strictly in-person but the process since changed to accommodate health protocols.
Both new applications and renewals can be done fully online, as the NBI now offers door-to-door delivery for the document.
How much is the NBI clearance?
Application costs P130 regardless of where you're from. Pick-up at the nearest NBI office is free, but a hard copy can also be delivered to you.
Online payments come with additional fees and delivery within Metro Manila and for provinces cost more than the actual NBI clearance itself.
Paying via GCash and similar online wallets will result in a P25 service fee. If you live in Metro Manila, shipping is priced at P200 and P300 for provincial addresses.
How do I apply for renewal?
After providing your NBI number, it's just a matter of verifying your identity through one of three ways: your mother's information, number, or e-mail.
If you change e-mails or phone numbers often, you can opt for your mother's information as this never changes.
Once system confirmation is complete, you can proceed to payment.
How do I pay for my NBI clearance renewal?
Online payments are accepted via the following channels, with a service fee of P25 per application:
- Bayad Center App
- Bayad Center Outlets
- ECPay
- 7-eleven
- GCash
- VISA/Mastercard
You will be given a reference number after choosing your preferred mod of payment. Write it down or screenshot this string of numbers as your e-wallet or payment service will ask for it.
Do not press the proceed button until you've paid P155. Only after confirmation can you choose your delivery option.
What about delivery?
You can opt to pick it up from the NBI branch nearest you, but for this guide, we'll focus on a fully online contactless process.
After choosing door-to-door delivery, you'll be redirected to DeliveryBox.PH, NBI's official partner courier. Metro Manila delivery is P200 and provincial delivery is P350.
Fill out the form with your complete name, address, and contact number. You're also required to pin your exact delivery location using a map.
Payment for delivery fees can made through the following channels:

- GrabPay
- AliPay
- UnionPay
- WeChat Pay

Online payments have a service fee of P7. If you live in the capital region, prepare to pay P207, and if in the province, P357.
