Featherweight boxer Nesthy Petecio is assured of a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics after beating her Italian opponent Irma Testa on Saturday.

Petecio is now in the running for the Philippines' second gold medal in the history of the games and the first in boxing. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz earlier this week ended the Philippines' 97-year-long wait for Olympic gold.

She also secured the Philippines first multi-medal finish in the Olympics after 89 years. In 1932, the Philippine contingent won three bronze medals in Los Angeles.

The Philippines' last Olympic medal in boxing was a silver from Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco in Atlanta in 1996.

The 29-year-old Davaoena will fight for the Olympic gold.

Details to follow.
