Commuters taking the EDSA Busway will not be allowed to ride without a Beep Card starting Oct. 1, the Department of Transportation said. The move aims to accelerate public transport's shift to cashless transactions during the pandemic.

The "No Beep, No Ride" policy takes effect at the start of the fresh GCQ in the capital, which is in effect until Oct. 31. The country's expressways have also begun the shift to purely contactless RFID technology at toll gates.

“We want to ensure that commuters along EDSA will have a safer and comfortable travel, while at the same time providing them a more seamless and efficient system of public transport,” said DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Steve Pastor.
