The Philippines on Monday reported over 5,000 new COVID-19 cases, a new record-high for 2021 and the country's highest single-day increase since August last year.

The Department of Health said it recorded 5,404 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total active cases to 53,479 or equivalent to 8.5% of the total nationwide tally of  626,893 since the start of the pandemic.

Eight new deaths were reported along with 71 new recoveries. In total, 12,837 deaths have been reported since the start of the pandemic and 560,577 recoveries.

The new record-high case tally for 2021 comes just as Metro Manila begins to implement a region-wide uniform curfew to limit movement in a bid to arrest the spread of the virus.

Metro Manila hospitals have also been reporting full capacities for COVID-19 cases.

The public is reminded to strictly observe minimum health standards--wearing of face mask, face shield, and observing physical distancing at all times.
