Gen Z, Millennials are Adulting Faster Due to COVID, Here are Their Priorities

As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on for the second year, many people, particularly the youth, feel robbed of the time and opportunities that they could have grabbed if not for the global health crisis.

It was an eye-opener for many. For millennials and Gen Zs, the pandemic has forced them to shift their priorities as they navigate the new normal. 

"The pandemic has really sped up adulting for these two generations and has shifted priorities to needs from wants," Melissa Henson, Manulife chief marketing officer said in a panel interview with reporters.

Here's what's on the priority list of young Filipinos' during the pandemic based on a survey of some 300 Filipino Gen Zs, and 200 millennials by insurer Manulife:

  1. Stay healthy and avoid illness
  2. Save money
  3. Become financially independent
  4. Secure a well-paying job
  5. Establish a business

In terms of worries, the idea of running out of money stresses millennials and Gen Zs the most. Here are the top stressors for the two generations:

  1. Running out of money
  2. Getting sick
  3. Own death or death of a family member
  4. Declining mental health
  5. Drowning in debt

Based on the survey, half of both generations at 51% consider achieving overall wellness as their top immediate goal during the pandemic with millennials and Gen Zs s preferring activities related to music, skills improvement, gaming, fitness or sports, and DIY programs as stress relievers.

But despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Henson said millennials and Gen Zs remain forward-looking in terms of their goals.

"They have an entrepreneurial mindset...they want to make things happen for them," she said.
