The Department of Health on Thursday tallied 14,895 new COVID infections, the second highest in a single day, as authorities weighed a possible extension of the lockdown in Metro Manila.
This brought the total active infections to 111,720 and the cumulative total since the pandemic began to 1,791,003.
Daily recoveries was at 8,248, while 258 more people died from COVID-19. This brings total recoveries to 1,648,402 and deaths to 30,881.
The ECQ or Enhanced Community Quarantine in Metro Manila and other high-risk areas is expected to end on Aug. 20. Authorities said there are only two options—extending ECQ or shifting to the less strict modified enhanced community quarantine or MECQ to arrest the spread of the more transmissible Delta variant.
Local government units have ramped up vaccination efforts regardless of restrictions with the goal of fully inoculating at least 50 million Filipinos before the year ends.
