The Philippines was hailed as Asia's leading beach destination in the 2020 World Travel Awards as the country reopens its top tourist spots from lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Pearl of the Orient was also recognized as Asia's leading dive destination, and leading tourism board. Popular luxury island Amanpulo in Palawan was named
Asia’s Leading Private Island Resort.
The Philippines, popular for its white-sand beaches such as Palawan and Boracay, bested India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand to win Asia's leading beach destination. This is the fourth time that the Philippines won the award.
It was the country's second consecutive time to be recognized as Asia’s leading dive destination.
Tourism is starting to regain its ground in the Philippines as the government further eased travel restrictions in October.
