9,838 New COVID Cases Push Total Active Infections Past 100,000

The Philippines reached a new grim milestone Friday, tallying an all-time high of over 100,000 active COVID-19 cases after reporting close to 10,000 new infections in a single day.

The Department of Health confirmed a new record-high 9,838 new COVID-19 cases in a single day on Friday, bringing the total active infections to 109,018--the highest ever since the start of the pandemic last year.

Fifty-four new deaths were reported, bringing the total to3,149. There were 663 new recoveries, bringing the total to 580,689.

Overall, the Philippines has tallied 702, 856 COVID-19 infections since the start of the pandemic that has reshaped the way humanity lives.

For over two weeks, the Philippines has been reporting around 5,000 to 8,000 new COVID-19 infections daily--a surge that health authorities attribute to new virus variants and vaccine complacency.

The surge in infections threatens to overwhelm the already exhausted healthcare system as well as stunt the economy's recovery from its worst recession since World War II.

Government moved to clamp down on the spread of infections by placing Metro Manila and nearby provinces in a bubble to curb the virus surge.
