The Philippines recorded 12,021 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, mirroring numbers from four months ago when cases surged, the Department of Health said.
This brought the total number of active cases to 81,399, the DOH said. There were 154 deaths and 9,591 recoveries. In total, the Philippines tallied 1,688,040 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.
Metro Manila and other high risk areas are currently under lockdown to arrest the spread of the more transmissible Delta variant. Under the strictest type of quarantine, only authorized persons outside of residence may leave their homes for work and essentials.
COVID wards at some hospitals are already full, with others nearing full capacity. The last time the country saw cases in the 12,000 range was back in late March to early April, a time when Filipinos were also stuck in enhanced community quarantine.
