8,562 New COVID Cases Recorded Before ECQ Takes Effect

The Philippines recorded 8,562 new COVID-19 cases on Friday after months of fewer cases and vaccine rollout, according to the Department of Health said.

The day's count was the highest in nearly three months, exceeding the 8,346 cases last May 2.

Metro Manila and other high-risk areas will shift to the stricter Enhanced Community Quarantine in an effort to arrest the spread of the more transmissible Delta variant.

Total number of cases is now at 1,580,824 with 61,920 active cases. New recoveries is at 2,854, bringing total to 1,491,182.

There were 145 reported deaths for the day, with total deaths up to 27,722.
