The Philippines on Wednesday reported 8,122 new COVID-19 cases, inching closer to 900,000 cumulative infections since the pandemic started last year.
This is the second straight day that the country reported over 8,000 COVID-19 cases and brings the total active cases to 173,047, the Department of Health said.
Wednesday's fresh infections were "low," the DOH said, citing few COVID-19 test outputs of laboratories last Monday. The country now has a cumulative total of 892,880 COVID-19 cases.
"Ang mababang bilang ng kaso ngayong araw ay dulot ng mas mababang testing output ng mga laboratoryo noong Lunes (12 April 2021). Patuloy na nakikipagtulungan ang DOH sa mga laboratoryo upang masiguro ang tuloy tuloy na operasyon at mataas na testing output bawat araw," the DOH said.
There were 162 new deaths and 501 fresh recoveries reported bringing the totals to 15,447 and 704,386 respectively.
Over the past few weeks, the country has been reporting over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases daily, prompting the government to place the Greater Manila Area under enhanced community quarantine to cap the surge in virus infections.
The restrictions were eased by a notch to modified enhanced community quarantine or MECQ from April 12 until April 30.
