A Magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Taiwan on Sunday afternoon, Phivolcs said as it allayed fears of a tsunami threat to the Philippines.
There is "no tsunami threat to the Philippines" from the earthquake that struck Taiwan's southeastern coast at 2:44 p.m., state volcanologists said. Taiwan is just above the Philippines' main island of Luzon.
The earthquake prompted Japan to issue a tsunami warning, Agence France Presse reported citing the U.S. Geological Survey.
"Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter," Phivolcs said.
"This is for information purposes only and there is no destructive tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," it added.
