Police Cadet Dies in Hazing, Triggering Investigation

PNP Chief reiterates policy vs violent initiations.

Authorities are investigating yet another hazing death, this time at the Philippine National Police Academy, prompting PNP Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar to reiterate the policy against violent initiation rites.

Cadet 3rd Class George Carl Magsayo was reportedly punched at least five times by his upperclassman, Cadet Second Class Steve Ceasar Maingat, on the night of Sept. 23, causing the 21-year-old junior to collapse, the PNP said.

Magsayo was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, the PNP said based on initial reports.

Maingat, who is under police custody, will be charge for violation of the Anti-Hazing Law on Monday, Eleazar told DZBB radio.

Kasama ang inyong PNP sa hangarin na maalis ang kultura ng sakitan at bugbugan sa PNPA dahil naniniwala kami na kung hindi ito maagapan ay madadala nila ang mali at mapanganib na kaisipang ito kapag pumasok na sila sa PNP, BJMP at BFP at kalaunan ay maging problema pa ng mga organisasyong ito,” the PNP chief said.
