President-elect Bongbong Marcos has chosen Armed Forces spokesperson Col. Ramon Zagala as the first commander of the Presidential Security Group, an AFP official said Sunday.
Zagala will serve as acting PSG commander in concurrent capacity as Marcos' acting senior military assistant, according to AFP public information office chief Col. Jorry Baclor.
The PSG is the primary agency tasked to provide close-in security to the president.
Zagala is the son of retired Maj. Gen. Rafael Zagala, who was the chief of the Philippine Army from 1972 to 1975, during the presidency of Marcos' father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
The younger Zagala was commissioned into military service in 1994 after graduating from the Officer Candidate School. He previously served as member of the PSG and aide de camp of former President Joseph Estrada until he was ousted following the Second EDSA Revolution in January 2001.
Apart from his previous post in the PSG, Zagala also served as commander of the Army's 28th Infnatry Battalion, assistant chief of staff for civil military officers of the Army's 10th Infantry Division and chief of the Army public affairs. He also was assigned as AFP spokesperson.
