Household budgets will continue to get a reprieve from Meralco this August as the power distributor announced lower electricity rates for the second straight month.

Meralco said it would implement a P0.2087 decrease per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for August which means that a typical household consuming 200kWh will see a decrease of around P42 in the total bill.

The move marks Meralco's second consecutive power rate reduction this year after last month's decrease of  P0.7067 per kWh.

Lower costs of buying electricity and distribution charges contributed to the fresh power rate reduction according to Meralco.

Another factor is the continuing refund to customers of some P48.3 billion by Meralco as ordered by the Energy Regulatory Commission. This is equivalent to a total refund rate of P1.8009 per kWh for residential customers, Meralco said.
