A retired general will now manage the Manila Bay Dolomite Beach after its head was removed for failing to control the weekend crowds that amounted to tens of thousands, authorities said.

Reuel Sorilla will replace Jacob Meimban as ground commander of the artificial patch of white sand that aims to help millions in Metro Manila keep their mental health in check during the pandemic.

"I selected a retired general for enforcement because the issue here is enforcement," said Sec. Roy Cimatu of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, that builder of dolomite beach.

Cimatu said he relieved Meimban from his post to give way to an investigation on the weekend crowds that peaked at 121,000.
