The Philippines on Thursday tallied 21,261 more COVID-19 cases on the first day of Metro Manila's alert-based quarantine system.

This brought total active cases to 177,946, and the cumulative total since the pandemic started to 2,304,192. There were 277 deaths and 13,644 new recoveries bringing the running totals to 36,018 and 2,090,228.

Metro Manila is under Alert Level 4, the second strictest level in a five-step system. Under this level, there will be no authorized persons outside residence and mayors can decide which areas or streets to put on lockdown depending on number of cases.

Interior Sec. Eduardo Año on Tuesday said Metro Manila mayors agreed to implement only one alert level for the entire region.
