The Philippines tallied 22,415 COVID-19 cases on Monday, beating the previous record-high in just one week.

Prior to the day's jump, the highest single day record was logged on Aug. 30 with 22,366 cases. The day's jump brings cumulative total since the pandemic began to 2,103,331, 159,663 of which are active.

There were 103 deaths and 20,109 recoveries reported, bringing totals to 34,337 and 1,909,361 respectively.

Metro Manila is set to pilot granular or street-level lockdowns starting Sept. 8 when it shifts to GCQ, the second-lowest quarantine type in a four-step classification, to contain the spread of the virus as businesses reopen.

The shift to granular lockdowns is only for testing so far, and not yet for implementation nationwide according to MMDA chairman Benhur Abalos.
