Former Sen. Bongbong Marcos Jr. challenged his critics to show him proof that history was being revised online as he sought to become the country's next president.
"Show me. Show me where there's revisionism from our part, from our side. Show me. Anything that we have said, we can prove that this actually happened," the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. told Korina Sanchez-Roxas in an interview which premiered on her YouTube channel on Monday.
Martial law survivors noted how the Marcos family is using social media to rewrite history, with the late strongman's kin claiming that their rule was the golden age of the Philippines while refusing to recognize records of corruption and human rights violations.
Marcos Jr. said details of his father's rule are made more accessible to the public through the internet, and he encouraged Filipinos to read up and not just listen to what he or the rest of his family says.
"'Why did your father do this? What happened there?'
"Mag-aral kayo, tignan niyo, magbasa kayo ng libro para you come to your own opinion. And that's what I think is happening," he added.
Marcos Jr. was also asked if his candidacy for president is a way to vindicate his family's name, but the late dictator's son said he has always been confused with such a question.
"How does anybody vindicate somebody?
My father's record will stand on its own," he added.
Marcos Jr., who currently leads in most presidential surveys, is running with a vision of unifying the country towards pandemic recovery alongside President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
