Taal Volcano is in a state of elevated unrest, Phivolcs said Tuesday as it warned of possible sudden steam-driven eruption.
While Taal remains under alert level 2 which indicates "increased unrest," Phivolcs said elevated unrest has been recurring and the volcano's condition is "unstable." An entry ban on Taal Volcano Island should stay, it said.
Under alert level 2, Phivolcs warned of possible sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas within and around the Taal Volcano Island.
Taal Volcano has recorded 288 volcanic earthquakes, 39 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, and 249 volcanic tremor events with durations of one to 20 minutes over the past 24 hours, Phivolcs said in its 8:30 a.m. bulletin.
"Upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Main Crater Lake and active degassing from fumaroles on the Main Crater that produced 300-meter-tall steam-laden plumes were observed since daybreak," it said.
Based on its observation, Phivolcs said there was persistent magmatic activity beneath Taal's crater. It advised local government units around the Taal Lake to prepare in case of renewed unrest of the volcano.
