Nine weak bursts of steam were recorded from the main crater of Taal Volcano over the last 24 hours, Phivolcs said Sunday, with the plumes rising up to 900 meters.
The phreatomagmatic bursts, caused by magma or molten rocks interacting with water, occurred between 3:50 p.m. on Saturday and 4:49 a.m. on Sunday and were "very short-lived," lasting only 10 seconds to two minutes, state volcanologists said.
In the past 24-hour period, the Taal Volcano Network also recorded 31 volcanic earthquakes, Phivolcs said, including 14 volcanic tremor events lasting one to three minutes, 16 low-frequency earthquakes, one hybrid event and low-level background tremor that has persisted since July last year.
Sulfur dioxide emissions averaged at 10,036 tons per day on Jan. 29, it also said, adding that the Taal Volcano Island and the Taal region had begun deflating in October 2021.
Alert Level 2 remains at Taal Volcano, signifying increased unrest. Phivolcs advised the public not to enter the Taal Volcano Island, which is a permanent danger zone, especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures. It also recommended avoiding flying any aircraft close to the volcano.
