Difficult times are a true test of skill. In a recent online panel survey, five Metro Manila mayors and local government units (LGUs) received high approval ratings for their performance amid the strains of the COVID-19 pandemic. These cities are as follows, in descending order: Valenzuela, Pasig, Manila, Marikina, and Taguig.

The ratings of these cities’ respective mayors are as follows: Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian (92 percent), Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto (83 percent), Manila Mayor Isko Moreno (76 percent), Marikina Mayor Marcelino Teodoro (69 percent), and Taguig Mayor Lino Cayetano (68 percent).

This is the third edition of the NCR COVID-19 Online Panel Survey conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia in partnership with Kantar. It covers the period of May 5 to May 8. PUBLiCUS Asia explained that the cities’ constituents were asked about their perception of their local officials, whose names were not mentioned in the questionnaire.

Kantar provided an online panel of 1,000 Metro Manila residents aged 18-70 from its pool of 100,000 Philippine panelists, with the number of respondents per city was distributed proportionally based on official population data.

The overall results of the survey show that nearly half the respondents (49.6%) approve or strongly approve of the response of their LGU's performance amid the pandemic, 26.8% disapprove or strongly disapprove of their LGU’s performance, while 23.6% neither approve nor disapprove.

“The best-case practices employed by these high-performing local chief executives and city governments should be studied and emulated by other LGUs and government institutions working to beat COVID-19,” said Mr. Aureli Sinsuat, PUBLiCUS Executive Director and spokesperson.
