Tumindig Icon Comes to Life in SONA Rallies

Tumindig, the viral campaign for resistance symbolized by a clenched fist pointing upwards, on Monday crossed over to the streets, at the annual protest rally timed with President Rodrigo Duterte's State of the Nation Address.

Former Bayan Muna party-list congressman Teddy Casiño shared on Twitter a photo of two Tumindig fists at the picket linesin UP Diliman.

It will be Duterte's last SONA, where he is expected ro define his legacy during the pandemic and chart his path post Malacanang. The 76-year-old leader had expressed his desire to run for vice president to keep his immunity from suit.

Artist Kevin Eric Raymundo, the brains behind the Tumindig icon, sought to inspire courage among netizens who have for years lived in fear of trolls and fake news purveyors.

KARAPATAN, an alliance of human rights advocates, also brought their own Tumindig icon to the protest as it calls for accountability over the unlawful killings in the Philippines.

Lumad women also joined the rally, bringing their red and yellow Tumindig placards while serving Duterte a notice of expulsion as president.

Members of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines wore shirts with logos inspired by the comic book character The Punisher, integrated with the famous Tumindig icon. In 2016, TIME Magazine branded Duterte "The Punisher" for his vow to kill criminals in his drug war.

Aside from the Tumindig fists, Bayan secretary-general Renato Reyes brought umbrellas to the rally to shield himself from the rain and the lies he said will drop during Duterte's last SONA.

"Mamayang 4pm sa bandang Batasan, inaasahang uulan ng kasinungalingan, babaha ng kabalbalan at magiging mahangin sanhi ng kayabangan. Magdala ng payong ng pagkakaisa at kapote ng katotohanan," Reyes said.

Bayan Muna representatives Carlos Zarate, Eufemia Cullamat, and Ferdinand Gaite joined the protests wearing their SONA protest outfit. The partylist lawmakers called for the demilitarization of the West Philippine Sea, increase in social pension, among others.

Outside the office of the Department of Agriculture, fishers' group PAMALAKAYA started a rally to condemn Duterte's inaction in protecting Philippine waters. The group joined the rally in UP Diliman shortly.
