An average of 20 tropical cyclones hit the Philippines every year making it necessary for authorities to give them Filipino names aside from their international monikers for easier recall.
PAGASA curates the names alphabetically and reuses the set every four years. This means that names that will be used this 2022 will be repeated in 2026, 2030, and 2034.
Names of storms that leave too much destruction in their wake however are "retired" and replaced with new ones from PAGASA's list of names.
