Ulysses (international name: Vamco) on Wednesday strengthened into typhoon, state weather bureau PAGASA said, ahead of its landfall later in the day.

The typhoon is forecast to make landfall over Polillo Islands and mainland Quezon between Wednesday night and Thursday morning before crossing Central Luzon and emerging over the western seaboard of Zambales, PAGASA said.

Ulysses may reach its peak intensity ranging from 130 to 155 kph before hitting land. It can however weaken once it hits the Sierra Madre and Zambales Mountain Ranges but will likely remain a typhoon throughout its traverse.

At 10 a.m., the eye of the typhoon was seen at 100 km north of Virac, Catanduanes. It packs maximum sustained winds of 125 kph and gusts of up to 155 kph. It is moving west, northwestward at a speed of 20kph.

Ulysses will bring destructive winds and intense rains over the northern portions of Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, and Camarines Norte--areas still reeling from the devastation of Super Typhoon Rolly--until Wednesday night.

Moderate to heavy rains will meanwhile prevail over Albay, Sorsogon, Quezon including Polillo Islands, and Burias and Ticao Islands.  Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon and Visayas will experience light to moderate with at times heavy rains.

Residents in the mentioned areas are advised to prepare for possible flooding, landslides, and lahar flows

PAGASA said there is a high risk of storm surge up to three meters high over the coastal areas of Quezon including Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, and the northern and eastern coastal areas of Camarines Sur.

Storm surge up to two meters high is possible over the coastal areas of La Union, Pangasinan, Isabela, Zambales, Aurora, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, northern portions of Mindoro Provinces including Lubang Island, Marinduque, Romblon, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Albay, and Sorsogon, and the remaining coastal areas of Camarines Sur.

"These storm surges, which may be accompanied by swells and/or breaking waves near the coast, can cause life-threatening and damaging coastal inundation. Moreover, there is also a moderate risk of seiche or storm surge over the coastal areas surrounding Laguna de Bay," PAGASA said.

The following tropical cyclone warning signals have been raised in these areas:
