The U.S. Navy said Thursday (Friday in Manila) that it was naming its new warship after the only Filipino navyman to receive the Medal of Honor, the highest award in America's military.
The upcoming Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer will be named USS Telesforo Trinidad (DDG 139), said Carlos Del Toro, the Secretary of the Navy.
On Jan. 21, 1915, Aklan-born Trinidad rescued two crewmen from a fire at USS San Diego despite being burned in the face. Petty officer Trinidad proceeded with the second rescue at a different boiler room despite his injuries, the U.S. Navy said.

“Having a ship named after such a significant figure highlights our diverse culture and that our people will always be our strategic advantage against any adversary," said Del Toro.
"I hope the naming of this ship is a beacon for not only Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders but for all our Sailors, Marines, and civilians who serve across the Department of the Navy. The service and sacrifice of these men and women have made our military and our nation stronger and better," he said.
The Arleigh Burke Class is part of the U.S. Navy's fleet of guided missile destroyers that provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities, the Navy said.
