Dismissed police officer Jonel Nuezca, who shot dead a mother and her son last year, has died in prison, the Bureau of Corrections said Wednesday.
Nuezca was declared dead on Tuesday night after his cellmates brought him to the New Bilibid Prison Hospital unconscious. The cause of death has yet to be determined, said BuCor spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag.
The disgraced police officer complained of dizziness prior to his death based on the report of the BuCor.
Chaclag said an investigation was underway to determine if there was foul play in the incident.
Nuezca was convicted of murder and sentenced to jail for of up to 40 years earlier this year for killing Sonya Rufino Gregorio, 52, and Frank Anthony Rufino Gregorio, 25.
He shot dead the Gregorios after an argument over the use of boga or improvised firecracker escalated and unearthed a long-standing dispute over right of way.
The incident was caught on video and went viral, stirring conversation on social media about killings and police brutality. Even President Rodrigo Duterte got wind of the crime, calling Nuezca "sick in the brain."
Nuezca was dismissed from the police force and had said that he regretted his actions.
