One Viral Ostrich is Safe After Ordeal in Metro Streets

It appeared to be healthy with no injuries.

(UPDATE) One of two ostriches that went viral after it was caught running in a Quezon City subdivision is safe at a wildlife park, environment officials said Friday. One of the birds died before being taken to the refuge, according to a GMA News report.

The giant flightless birds provided a distraction during the reimposed Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces. Its plight also raised awareness over what types of animals could be kept as pets.

It also prompted social media users to share random videos of animals caught roaming the streets while humans are required to stay at home, from pigs to cows.

The ostrich at the park appeared to be healthy and had no injuries, said its attending veterinarian, Steven Toledo. The bird was surrendered to the center, he said. Based on initial information, the animal was bought from an ostrich farm in Cagayan de Oro.

"Pag ganito, dapat wala sa loob ng village," Toledo told reportr.

For now, the ostrich will stay at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife. It was unclear why it was in the subdivision. Here are more photos:
