Video of an off-duty policeman's fatal shooting of an elderly woman and her son went viral overnight on Monday, stirring conversation on social media about killings and police brutality.
Corporal Jonel Nuezca, 46 shot Sonya Rufino Gregorio, 52, and Frank Anthony Rufino Gregorio, 25 in Paniqui town, Tarlac on Sunday after an argument over the use of boga or improvised firecracker escalated and unearthed a long-standing dispute over right of way, said the town's police chief, Lt. Col. Noriel Rombaoa.
Nuezca, who is on break from his duty in Paranaque City, surrendered and is under police custody. He could be charged with double murder, Rombaoa told GMA News.
Early Monday "MY FATHER IS A POLICEMAN" was the top trend on Twitter with some 30,000 posts. A girl on the scene was heard in the viral video as shouting: "My father is a policeman."
Also trending: #StopTheKillingsPH, #JusticeForSonyaGregorio and TRIGGER WARNING. The shooting happened in broad daylight.
"Ayaw po muna niyang makipag-usap, sabi po niya sa korte na lang... Nagsisisi siya sa nagawa niya na pamamaril," Rombaoa said on Unang Hirit.
Nuezca and his victims were neighbors. Nuezca went to the Gregorios' backyard after hearing that the boga was being fired. "Pumunta sa bahay ng bitkima. Nagakaroon ng pagtatalo, naungkat matagal na alitan sa right of way."
Addressing the victims' family, Rombaoa said: "Gagawin namin ang lahat ng makakaya namin para mabigyan ng hustisya ang kapamilya nyo."
