Taal Volcano emitted high levels of sulfur dioxide on Thursday, Phivolcs said, warning those living in nearby areas to wear N95 masks to protect themselves against volcanic smog.
The volcano, which remains under alert level 2 or increased unrest, belched an average of 15,347 tons of sulfur dioxide that rose up to 3 kilometers on Tuesday morning. The emissions have been increasing since Aug. 13, Phivolcs said.
Residents of Talisay and Barangay Barigon, Agoncillo have reported ill effects from the volcanic smog, the agency said.
Residents living in nearby areas are told to:
- Avoid outdoor activities, stay indoors and shut doors and windows to block out the vog
- Wear face masks, ideally N95, to filter out particles that can irritate the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract
- Drink plenty of water to reduce throat irritation
- Seek help ffrom a doctor or barangay health unit if needed
Phivolcs asked local officials to consider temporary evacuation of severely exposed residents.
