Classes in Metro Manila will be suspended from Jan. 15 to 22 to give students and school personnel a health break during the Omicron surge, the Department of Education said on Friday.
Students and teachers are encouraged to stay at home during that period to avoid catching the virus, DepEd-National Capital Region said based on a statement released by PTV. It made no distinction between public and private schools.
Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro also on Friday said the city would implement an academic health break covering all levels, both public and private, from Jan. 17 to 29, 2022.
"Huwag munang magsagawa ng online o face-to-face classes at magbigay ng mga gawaing bahay sa kanilang mag-aaral habang epektibo ang nasabing health break," Teodoro said in a statement.
Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto said classes in all levels, public and private, are suspended from Jan. 15-22.
Classes for the week of Jan. 24-29 will be purely asynchronous, before students go on a midyear break scheduled on Jan. 31 to Feb. 5.
The midyear break will be used by learners to comply with their backlogs in schoolwork while teachers are expected to attend to their usual activities during that period, DepEd said.
To make up for lost contact days, school heads are instructed to come up with activities and other teaching-learning interactions.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno on Thursday suspended classes in all levels, both public and private, in the city from Jan. 14 to 22 to allow students and teachers to rest.
Students in Calabarzon will also go on a break for two weeks, from Jan. 17 to 29, to help learners cope with the COVID surge.
