Among the many reminders right after COVID-19 vaccination is to refrain from drinking alcohol which begs the question of whether the consumption of liquor could affect the efficacy of the jab.
While there is no established proof that alcohol consumption can lower the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, Food and Drug Administration director general Eric Domingo still discourages drinking liquor after inoculation for purposes of monitoring side effects.
"We just like you to be very healthy and very clear ang pag-iisip after the vaccination," Domingo said in a Laging Handa briefing on Wednesday.
Being drunk after vaccination might make it difficult to monitor possible vaccine side effects such as dizziness according to Domingo.
"Syempre po gusto natin na buhay at gising yung diwa natin lalo na yung first 24 to 48 hours after vaccination dahil mahirap kung tayo ay nahihilo or nawawala sa sarili dahil nakainom, baka mamaya may mga adverse events na pala na hindi natin napapansin. Hindi natin alam kung ano ang nangyayari sa katawan natin kung dahil ba iyon sa pag-inom o sa bakuna," he said.
The World Health Organization has also clarified that the effectiveness of the jab is not influenced by any food or drink intake before and after vaccination.
"The effectiveness of the vaccine is not dependent on any food or drink before or after taking the vaccine," the WHO said.
But COVID-19 vaccinated or not, it's still best to remember to drink moderately.
