Duterte Declares July 20 a Regular Holiday for Eid'l Adha

President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday declared July 20 a regular holiday throughout the Philippines in observance of Eid'l Adha or the Muslim Festival of Sacrifice.

Duterte, through Proclamation No. 1189, said the date was chosen upon the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.

"The observance of Eid'l Adha shall be subject to existing community quarantine and social distancing measures," the President said.

Eid'l Adha is considered as "one of the two great feasts of Islam" with the other being Eid'l Fitr. 

The Muslim festival commemorates the sacrifice made by Abraham in obedience to Allah’s command and is traditionally celebrated with a feast.

Muslims are estimated to make up around 10% of the Philippines' 109-million strong population.
