Featherweight boxer Nesthy Petecio settled for a silver medal in Tokyo on Tuesday, making history as the first woman from the Philippines to achieve such a feat in the traditionally male sport.
Petecio lost to Japan's Sena Irie via unanimous decision on Tuesday. She takes home the silver medal, making her the second-highest placed Filipino athlete in Tokyo 2020 after weightlifting gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz.
It took two strong women to lead the Philippines to its strongest finish in the Olympics. Apart Diaz ending a 97-year wait for gold, it was also the first time since 1932 that the country finished the games with more than one medal.
Petecio ended the 25-year wait for a podium finish in boxing, a feat last achieved by Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco in Atlanta in 1996, who won silver.
