Phivolcs told residents on the Philippines northern and eastern seaboards to monitor possible sea level changes after a Magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck Alaska on Thursday.
The earthquake hit Chignik, Alaska at 2:15 p.m. with a depth of 18 kilometers. Such intensity could generate a destructive tsunami that can be felt near the epicenter within minutes or hours, state seismologists said.
Chignik is on the northeast end of the Pacific Ocean while the Philippines lies on the west side.
