General Debold Sinas, the chief of the Philippine National Police, has tested positive for COVID-19 and is under quarantine while undergoing treatment, his spokesman said.
Sinas is "okay" and the PNP is appealing for prayers for his speedy recovery, said Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana, head of the police public information office.
Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, the Deputy PNP Chief for Administration, will serve as officer in charge while Sinas recovers.
The PNP reported 105 new COVID cases on Thursday, bringing the total to 12,001.
The Philippines is battling a surge in cases that forced a two-week curfew in all of Metro Manila, home to roughly a tenth of the population.
