The Philippines on Saturday tallied 1,997 new COVID-19 cases as the Department of Health reminded Filipinos to be extra careful when bringing children to public places.

The day's tally brought active cases to 29,382. The DOH also reported 1,696 new recoveries and 238 new deaths.

Overall, a total of 2,815,080 COVID-19 cases have been reported since the pandemic began in March 2020, of which 2,740,426 have recovered and 45,272 died.

Health Usec. Maria Rosario Vergeire reminded adults to exercise caution when bringing kids to public places in response to a viral report that a toddler contracted COVID-19 after a mall visit.

"More establishments were opened, but we advise parents and guardians to take extra precaution if they will bring their children with them," Vergeire said.

She also encouraged all eligible individuals aged 12 and up to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to achieve the "cocoon effect", which protects those who had not been jabbed.
