The Philippines on Sunday logged 20,755 new COVID-19 cases as Metro Manila entered its last week under Alert Level 4.
New COVID-19 infections brought the number of active cases to 161,447. A total of 24,391 new recoveries were reported. Like on Saturday, no new deaths were tallied due to technical issues with COVIDKaya, the Department of Health's COVID-19 reporting system.
It's the first time in eight days that the government reported over 20,000 cases in one day. The last time this happened was on Sept. 18, with 23,134 cases.
Overall, a total of 2,490,858 COVID-19 cases have been reported since the pandemic began in March 2020, of which 2,292,006 have recovered and 37,405 died.
Metro Manila is currently under Alert Level 4 of the new, alert-based quarantine classification system, which is expected to be lifted on Sept. 30. Certain areas are under granular lockdown due to high case counts driven by Delta, which is now the dominant variant in the country.
President Rodrigo Durterte last week said face shields may be skipped in outdoor areas, but are still required in closed, crowded, and close contact areas.
