Philippines Records 7,000 COVID Cases, Highest in 6 Weeks

OCTA says there's still time to cap infections.

The Philippines recorded 7,186 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, the highest single-day increase in more than six weeks, and an additional 72 deaths, the Department of Health said.

President Rodrigo Duterte warned on Monday of stricter virus curbs if the current outbreak worsens. According to OCTA Research, daily cases could hit 8,000 to 10,000 infections a day without stronger countermeasures to contain the more contagious Delta variant.

Last week, Duterte tightened quarantines in some areas, including Metro Manila to address a looming surve due to Delta. Stay at home orders for kids was reinstated while the curfew for 12 million people in the capital region was extended to six hours from four.
