The Philippines logged 1,671 cases on Friday as transportation authorities study removing the cap on public transportation in Metro Manila if it shifts to Alert Level 1 by March.

This is the seventh straight day the country tallied less than 2,000 cases. Friday's daily case tally brought active cases to 55,140. The Department of Health also recorded 59 deaths and 1,586 recoveries.

Since the pandemic started in March 2020, the Philippines has in total confirmed 3,658,892 COVID-19 cases, including 3,547,528 recoveries and 56,224 deaths.

Public transport might return to 100% capacity with all routes opened if Metro Manila eases to Alert Level 1, or the "new normal", MMDA officer-in-charge Romando Artes said.

Metro Manila mayors unanimously agreed to recommend to de-escalate to the "new normal", which means removing most restrictions on mobility and businesses.
