For the third day in a row, the Philippines on Sunday reported over 9,000 new COVID-19 cases as Filipinos in and out of Metro Manila prepare for the stricter enhanced community quarantine.

The Department of Health tallied 9,475 new COVID-19 cases, to bring the total active cases to 105,568.

Eleven new deaths were reported, bringing the total fatalities to 13,170 since the start of the pandemic. There were 22,000 new recoveries, bringing the total to 603,154.

Since the start of the pandemic, the Philippines has tallied a total of 721, 892 COVID-19 cases.

Prior to Sunday's tally, the Philippines has been reporting over 9,000 new COVID-19 infections for over two days already, emphasizing the need to arrest a surge that health authorities attribute to new virus variants and vaccine complacency.

On Saturday, the government moved to further restrict movement in Metro Manila and the nearby provinces of Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite, and Rizal to curb the spread of COVID-19.
