Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Tuesday confirmed that he is running for vice president with Sen. Panfilo Lacson as his running mate for president in the 2022 elections.
Sotto confirmed his tandem with Lacson in a text message to reportr, adding that an official launch was scheduled on Aug. 4. Both senators have been teasing their potential candidacies for the two highest government positions as early as May.
Lacson said that if they both decide to run, his tandem with Sotto for the next year's polls was already "cast in stone."
Earlier this month, Lacson and Sotto kicked off their consultative meetings in various provinces across the country to help them decide about running.
They also met with members of the Aksyon Demokratiko party, which Sotto said his party, the Nationalist People's Coalition, was considering coalescing with.
The Lacson-Sotto ticket is the first tandem to be confirmed for the 2022 elections which will determine the successors of President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo.
