The Philippines on Monday logged fewer than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases for the first time in 2022, day before Metro Manila shifts to Alert Level 1.
The day's tally of 951 infections brought active cases to 52,179, with a total of 1,717 new recoveries and 50 new deaths reported.
Overall, a total of 3,661,997 COVID-19 cases have been reported since the pandemic began in March 2020, of which 3,553,367 have recovered and 56,451 died.
Alert Level 1 is the lowest set of restrictions under the five-tier alert-based COVID quarantines.
The Department of Health likened Alert Level 1 to the “new normal", where capacity limits in business establishments and public transportation will be removed but minimum health standards will still be observed.
Temperature checks may be skipped under the lower alert level, Cabinet Sec. Karlo Nograles said. Employees are also encouraged to return to work.
The MRT has returned to full capactiy operations, the first time in two years.
