New COVID Cases Top 20,000 for Second Straight Day

The Philippines on Sunday reported a total of 21,411 new cases of COVID-19, after posting the biggest -single day jump of 26,303 in the previous day.

This brought the total active cases to 181,951 and the cumulative total since the pandemic began to 2,227,367. There were 168 deaths and 25,049 new recoveries on Sunday, bringing the running totals to 35,145 and 2,010,271.

Saturday's new record of 26,303 in a single day beat the previous record of 22,820 two days prior.

Granular lockdowns were set to be piloted in Metro Manila starting Sept. 8, but the decision was taken back on Sept. 7. The last-minute extension of MECQ is expected to last until Sept. 15.

By Sept. 16, Metro Manila will pilot a new community quarantine system. Under this new system, the quarantine classification will only be ECQ or GCQ with the latter being implemented in tandem with an alert level system.
