17,447 New COVID Cases Tallied as Local Lockdowns Eyed for 'Ber' Months

The Department of Health on Friday tallied 17,447 new COVID infections as authorities eye welcoming the ber months with street lockdowns to contain the virus.

This brought the total active infections to 142,531 and the cumulative total since the pandemic began to 1,916,461. 

Daily recoveries was at 6,771, while 113 more people died from COVID-19. This brought total recoveries to 1,741,089 and deaths to 32,841.

The MECQ in the capital region and other high-risk areas is expected to last until Aug. 31. Interior Sec. Eduardo Año said ealier said granular lockdowns could replace region-wide quarantine classifcations as early as September if approved.
