The Philippines reported 8,162 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the cumulative tally closer to 1 million.
Total active COVID-19 cases stood at 77,075, the Department of Health said. Since the start of the pandemic, the country has reported a total of 997,523 COVID-19 infections.
There were 109 new deaths reported and 20,509 new recoveries bringing the totals to 16,783 and 903,665 respectively.
A renewed surge of COVID-19 cases attributed by health authorities to new virus variants and vaccine complacency has overwhelmed the country's healthcare system, prompting the revival of stricter community quarantines.
Until the end of April, Metro Manila and the nearby provinces of Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite, and Rizal are under modified enhanced community quarantine to contain the surge in COVID-19 cases.
